Oxnard—The City Council, on Tuesday, September 15, renamed Cesar Chavez Drive to Compassina Place.
CITY Manager Alex Nguyen said the Council is responsible for deciding, on public policy, whether to change a street name in light of the revelations.
“This is different from the consideration that our policies have, with regard to reaching out to any of the residents who live on any such street,” he said. The public policy question belongs to the Council, and the name consideration is for the Council.
He noted that a lot of this has developed over time.
“Just because there are some names that were less than easy to pronounce that were put in place decades ago doesn’t mean we should continue that,” he said. “We’re simply looking at public safety and dispatch. This is not about language learning for the entire community or perfecting the correct pronunciations. This is just for dispatch. Sometimes those calls go out not for our dispatch; they go out to our Fire Department or Police Departments, who know the streets like the back of their hands.”
He noted that other agencies come in and provide, and the City is looking to improve the system going forward.
