Oxnard—The City Council, on Tuesday, September 1, unanimously proclaimed October as Down Syndrome Awareness Month in Oxnard.
MAYOR Luis McArthur said it's important to recognize Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October, raise awareness about Down syndrome, and challenge stereotypes and barriers.
"Also to highlight their abilities and accomplishments," he said. "I think many of us have family members, or people with special needs, and it's an honor for us to bring awareness to all the people for doing such fabulous work."
McArthur read the proclamation and said, "Approximately 1 in every 700 children born in the United States has Down syndrome, representing about 6,000 births per year.
"There are over 400,000 individuals living with Down syndrome in the United States, and research and early intervention have resulted in dramatic improvements in the lifespan of those who are affected; additional research is needed into the causes and treatment of Down syndrome."
He said people with Down syndrome are active participants in educational, occupational, recreational, and social circles.
