Oxnard--I’ll be honest, some of my best memories growing up are from the Fourth of July.
AS a young Boy, the Fourth meant a family trip to Freeport Stadium to see Midget Racers, along with the Demolition Derby, and finally, a big Fireworks Show above Freeport Stadium, all put together by Volunteers at the Freeport Fire Department. My Father was part of the Freeport Fire Department.
Fire Department Members would participate in skills challenges throughout the afternoon, and I would always root for my Dad’s Team, Hook, and Ladder Company No 1, affectionately known as the Dead End Kids.
The Dead End Kids were a rowdy group of guys who liked protecting the community, drinking beer during off hours, and loved barbecuing. It was no different on July 4, the barbecue was blazing with hamburgers and hot dogs, and there was always a giant kettle of sweet corn on the cob cooking. The guys would sell ears of corn, and I’d always bug my mother for extra corn because I love corn on the cob.
