Street sign purchase moves forward

Oxnard--The Public Works & Transportation Committee Tuesday, June 13, approved a purchase order with Traffic Network Signs Inc. for finished street signs in the City of Oxnard.

STREETS Division Manager Philip Schweider presented the item and said the purchase order will not exceed $750,000 and end on June 30, 2028.

He said the streets division maintains over 20,000 signs within the City limits and must meet regulatory compliance standards for directional and traffic control signs.

“Traffic signs communicate rules, warnings, and guidance for safe navigation of roadways,” he said. “The new signs will meet compliance standards set forth by the Federal and Highway Administration. The rules and regulations are guided by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.”

In the Fiscal Year 2022-23, he said the streets division repaired and replaced 2,291 regulatory warning, guide, service, and informational street signs.

“The signs are replaced when damaged, faded, broken, corroded, or missing,” he said.

The streets division utilizes a commercial sign vendor to manufacture signs and has done so for 30 years. However, he noted that Public Works has a small sign shop at the Corporation Yard where the staff assembles, cleans, and reuses traffic signs.
