Virtual MLK Celebration inspires the crowd

Oxnard-- The 36th Annual Martin Luther King Committee of Ventura County celebration may have been virtual, but the Zoom event, January 17, kept King’s spirit of “One People, One Nation, and One Dream” alive and moving into the future.

ATTENDEES participating virtually filled the Zoom chat room with words of praise, celebration and inspiration as the community continues dealing with Covid-19.

Bernice King, the daughter of the late Dr.Martin Luther King Jr., sent a message to the group to clear up any confusion about a headline claiming that the King family will not celebrate the King Holiday if the government does not pass the voting rights legislation.

“It’s really not will we be celebrating, but how we are celebrating or more appropriately commemorating the King Holiday,” she said. “We will be commemorating the King Holiday, and we are encouraging all of you to continue your commemorations as well. However, if voting rights are still hanging in the balance by the King Holiday on January 17, then we, meaning all of us, need to use our commemorations and platforms on that particular day to do what Doctor King would do.
