Oxnard-- Looking back at 2022, the year is marked by grand celebrations as the area moved forward from Covid-19 restrictions, while at the same time, there were incredible tragedies the public reluctantly had to endure.
CARMEN RAMIREZ DEATH
The most significant tragedy the public shared and grieved over was the loss of Supervisor Carmen Ramirez, who was killed in a traffic incident on August 12. She was struck in the crosswalk at West Seventh as she was walking towards an event.
Members of the public packed Plaza Park on August 14 to console each other over the loss and share memories of Ramirez during a celebration of life and candlelight vigil.
Ramirez Chief of Staff Robert O’Riley called Ramirez’s death a devastating loss to the County and for him personally.
“She was one of the most beloved servants our county has ever seen,” he said as he fought back the tears. “I was having dinner with a friend when I got the news, and I rushed over to the hospital.”
Barbara Macri-Ortiz told the crowd that the Candlelight Vigil that it was the hardest thing she had ever done.
