After-School Funds approved

Oxnard--The Community Ser­vices Public Safety, Housing & De­ve­lopment Committee, Tuesday, May 23, approved the After School Education & Safety Program offered to students in the Oxnard School District.

The program will receive $4.7 million for the upcoming year.

Recreation Supervisor Danaly Perez oversees the Oxnard Scholars After-School program, which provides programming at over 20 school sites, serves 2,200 students, and employs over 100 people.

“The School District trains all of our instructors with over 100 hours of professional staff development,” she said.

The program includes homework assistance, English language development, math, and reading fluency with high-frequency words.

“One that we really put an emphasis on is homework assistance,” she said. “In the After-School Program, we recognize that not all students are able to go home and receive the assistance needed to complete their homework assignments, so we put an emphasis on that. A lot of factors go into the inability to complete those homework assignments.”

She said one they’ve been able to recognize is the language barrier, something they take seriously.

“We also put an emphasis on math fluency this year, and a lot of our staff is trained by retired educators through the Ventura County Office of Education,”…
