Art saves thecommunity

Oxnard—The public outcry was large, loud, and impassioned during the Tuesday, Feb. 18 City Council meeting about the Oxnard Performing Arts Center Corporation (OPAC).

The OPAC provides cultural and community programming by supporting, producing, and presenting theater, dance, music, media/visual arts, residencies, and outside-the-box programs that are of, by, and for Oxnard.

The agreement amended the operating agreement at the Oxnard Performing Arts Convention Center (OPACC) in the auditorium and meeting Rooms.

Dr. Darren Davis said the OPAC is a non-profit organization, and the proceeds from room rentals remain with the community.

“The non-profit board needs the assurance of a separate agreement with the City to continue the many cultural and artistic events provided to our community,” he said. “We can’t do this through grant proceeds alone; we need the room rental income to provide these programs.”
