Bethany Ascencion stays focused on her future

Oxnard-- Bethany Ascencion is working towards a goal. She is focused on becoming a Debutante with the 20th Century Onyx Club in Oxnard.

The 20th Century Onyx Club promotes and supports social welfare and charitable activities in the community and encourages the development of social responsibility among young people.

The club also provides scholarship incentives for young people seeking higher education.

Bethany said her mom, former Oxnard City Clerk Michelle Ascencion, is a former Debutante with the 20th Century Onyx Club, and when Bethany heard about all the activities within the group, she wanted to get involved.

“They have etiquette lessons and charities,” she said. “They have scholarships to attend schools and raise money for lots of charity organizations. I think that’s a nice thing, and it would be a fun experience.”

Bethany said she was raising money through a popcorn sale, and she’s about halfway to her goal.

“It’s not exactly where we want it to be right now,” she said. “Selling popcorn was my Mentor, Arlene Twine’s idea.”

When Bethany first became focused on being a debutante, she needed to learn about raising money and filling out forms.
