Casa Aliento Grant Approved

Oxnard—The Community Services, Public Safety, and Housing Committee, on Tuesday, Jan. 27, approved a loan grant for the Casa Aliento Apartments.

The 70-unit permanent supportive housing project is located at 1245 N. Oxnard Blvd.

Albert Ramirez presented the item and said Casa Aliento, formerly the Vagabond Inn, and during the initial round of Home Key Funding in 2020, said the Community Development Partners (CDP), an experienced affordable housing developer, and Mercy House, partnered with the City of Ventura to provide Home Key applications and successfully secured funding from Housing and Community Development and acquired the Vagabond.

Mercy House has been operating the Vagabond Inn as a temporary noncongregate shelter to convert the temporary housing into permanent supportive housing that provides the amenities, services, and resources necessary for the homeless.

“On Sept. 16, 2021, the Planning Division approved a zone clearance to allow the change of use and convert the 70-room motel into a permanent supportive housing complex,” he said. “On May 4, 2023, the Planning Commission approved a major modification to make on and offsite improvements and subdivide the 1.81-acre existing site into two parcels via a tentative parcel map to separate the property for Casa Aliento and Denny’s.…
