Oxnard-- In his report to the City Council, Tuesday, December 7, City Manager Alex Nguyen said the city had a major cleanup at the Halaco Superfund site at the end of November.
The effort removed a lot of debris left by members of the homeless community encamped at the site.
The groups involved with the cleanup included the Ventura County Healthcare Agency, Ventura County Behavioral Health, the Salvation Army, the Oxnard Police Department’s Homeless Liaison Officers, Mercy House, The Nature Conservancy, and many other city departments, including the Oxnard Fire Department, Environmental Resources, the Oxnard Police Department, Code Compliance, and the Housing Department.
Housing Director Emilio Ramirez thanked the entire team that participated in the “many month” effort.
“The effort started more than a year ago, where we started doing outreach to the site to identify the needs of the people,” he said. “That outreach included city staff, medical doctors, outreach counselors, behavioral health counselors, and a variety of services to identify the needs. That resulted in a provision of shelter, interim shelter, and noncongregate shelter, where we’re offering shelter beds in motel rooms to people who were accepting and in need of those services.”
