Oxnard-- The City Council received an update about its speed hump program Tuesday, October 17, which includes amendments to the program’s eligibility criteria.
The City’s goal is for more streets to qualify for speed hump installation and to reallocate Police and staff resources to other crucial city locations.
Assistant Traffic Engineer Jose Rivera presented the item and said the Council approved the speed hump program on October 18, 2022, modeled after Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
“However, key community differences have impacted the ability of many segments to qualify for speed humps,” he said. “The City of Oxnard has a great style of local street networks. Other cities have a subdivision-style residential collector street network.”
He said the City will have short street segments between intersections, and other cities will have long street segments between intersections.
“The City of Oxnard generates low speeds, and other cities generate high speeds,” he said. There have been 29 applications submitted to date, and 12 street segments were not eligible due to the short length of uninterrupted street segments.”
He said 17 street segments qualify for further evaluation, and one street segment meets the current speed hump criteria.
