Oxnard—During its final full meeting on Tuesday, December 3, the City Council stopped to honor Former Mayor John Zaragoza and renamed the Oxnard Transit Center the John C. Zaragoza Transit Center Oxnard.
The Mayor was elected in 2020 after terming out his County Supervisor Seat after his service began in 2008. That was preceded by serving on the City Council from 1996 until 2008, including four years as Mayor Pro Tem.
City Manager Alex Nguyen said nobody deserves the Honor more than Former Mayor John Zaragoza in this or any other community.
“When you put together his three decades of being a public servant, City Employee, and then three more decades of being an elected official for this community,” Nguyen said.
Council Member Gabe Teran asked for a summary of Zaragoza’s long history of community service, and Nguyen said Zaragoza started as one of Oxnard’s Bus Drivers.
“During his years as an elected official, he was a staunch advocate for improving and expanding public transit in Oxnard and throughout the County,” Nguyen said. “We wouldn’t have the public Bus service we have today without his efforts. This truly fits his spirit of public service.”
