Oxnard-- The Finance & Governance Committee Tuesday, December 13, approved changing its email and website domain to .gov from.org for its email and websites.
Chief Information Officer Helen Miller presented the video and said the action authorizes Mayor John Zaragoza to sign the authorization letters to change the City’s online and email extensions.
Miller said the government passed the DOTGOV Online Trust in Government Act in December 2020, which encourages using .gov internet domain names by State and Local agencies.
“Using .gov strengthens government website security because the U.S. Government is the sole manager over the .gov domain,” she said. “Only entities that register as the U.S. Government can use it. The improved security mitigates the risk of cyber attacks (thefts).”
She said the move is Oxnard’s choice that maintains public trust and enhances its online presence and services. The City domain name is central to its brand and internet availability and lets residents know they’re accessing official City services and information.
“It protects staff, residents, our vendor partners, and the general public from online threats, things like phishing, scam websites, and misinformation,” Miller said. “The timing is right to make this change to .gov because the City currently has…
