Insect FESTIVAL educates children

Oxnard--Plaza Park was the place to be Saturday, June 3, as the Oxnard Insect Festival returned with a huge crowd dressed in insect attire that enjoyed a family-friendly day.

KIDS went from exhibit to exhibit, learning about insects’ role in nature, including their history and where they thrive.

The featured event of the day was the insect buffet, as city employees dined on insects and reviewed the taste and texture as the raucous crowd cheered them on.

Cultural and Community Services Director Terrel Harrison said he’s “excited beyond belief ” to have the Insect Festival back on the calendar.

“This is one of the best things I’m involved with in the City of Oxnard,” he said. “It’s really bringing the community all together in a complete way. There’s good music; it’s educational and wonderful.”

He isn’t sure if he planned to snack on any bugs. 

“This is very difficult to get the food (insects); there is the educational piece, but what makes this work is the team we have at cultural and community services,” he said. “It’s difficult, but they make it easy. They’re dedicated to doing these things, and it’s a labor of love for them.”
