Oxnard—The 40th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Day story concludes with Keynote Speaker Dr. Gay Theresa Johnson, the Director of the Blum Center on Poverty, Inequality, and Democracy at USCB (University of California, Santa Barbara.)
"JOHNSON was a professor at UCSB from 2005-2015, and then she spent 10 years in the Department of Chicana/o Studies and Central American Studies at UCLA, and as an Associate Director of the Ralph J. Bunch Center for African-American Studies.”
She is also the author of three acclaimed books: Futures and Radicalism, Spaces of Conflict, and the Sounds of Serendipity.” “Happy King Day, everybody,”
Johnson said. “I want to thank the young people representing us so well. I am so proud of all of you.”
She thanked the Martin Luther King Jr. Committee for the opportunity to speak.
“I’m grateful,” she said. “It means a lot for me to be here with you today. I’m grateful to the Martin Luther King Committee of Ventura for their work and education.”
She feels the weight of the political moment in Ventura County, and she dedicated her remarks to “the memory of the Mighty Bill Terry. Rest in power.”
