Oxnard-- The 37th Annual Ventura County Martin Luther King Jr. Day event was a day filled with pride and hope that carried the message that in “Darkness, Be the Light Striving for Freedom.”
THE rain came down hard early, but the skies cleared, were replaced by gusty winds, and the sun shined as the March left Plaza Park.
Mayor John Zaragoza said it’s important they honor Dr. Martin Luther King but wasn’t concerned about the early weather.
“I would never say I’m glad it stopped raining because we need so much rain,” he said. “This is about the 10th wave we’ve had.”
“Martin Luther King has done a lot of good for the community,” he said. “Oxnard is one of the most diverse Cities in the County of Ventura. Whether it’s our people or our administration or Council, we’re diverse, and it makes Oxnard the great City it is. I’ve been doing this for two or three decades.”

Zaragoza noted that King used to say that diversity is important.
Trevyn McCoy from ILW Local 10 brought his drill team down for the event and noted that they brought the team back to life in 2001.
