Oxnard—The Public Works & Transportation Committee, on Tuesday, October 28, held a workshop on Lighting for the proposed Sports Park.
ASSISTANT Public Works Steve Howlett said the workshop pilot project for Lighting at City Parks includes: Sports Field Lighting, Walkway Lighting, and Park hours for Lighting, and directs Staff to develop hours of operation.
“Based on the national average of parks and park amenities, provided by the National. Recreation and Parks Association, in the Oxnard 2021 Master Plan, the City of Oxnard is deficient in the number of soccer and multi-purpose fields for a population of the size of Oxnard,” he said. “The Staff has received requests from community members, soccer teams, the Parks, Recreation & Community Services Commission, and the Mayor for additional sports fields and sports field lighting.”
He said the Master Plan identified two key findings: Oxnard is significantly below national standards for parks and recreation, and for soccer and multipurpose fields.

“Soccer is the most popular sport in the Community,” he said. “There are approximately 250 youth soccer teams and approximately 50-60 adult teams in the City of Oxnard, but the City only has eight dedicated programmable soccer fields.
