MLK Walk touts equity, inclusion and justice “

Oxnard-- The Dr. Martin Luther King Junior celebration, remembrance, and walk continues with State Assemblyman Steve Bennett from the 38th District offering his favorite King quote.

"ONE of his famous lines was we need an opportunity for everyone to grow up in the Sunshine of Opportunity,” Bennett said. “I think about when he made those comments back in the 1960s and where are we today?”

He said in the 1960s, four Blacks were in the California State Legislature, and today, there are 12. “Yes, we’ve made some progress, but we still have a long way to go,” he said. “Particularly since 2016, we’ve seen ourselves going backward in terms of the amount of hate, the amount of racism, and the amount of intolerance that is out there. Dr. King started us down this road. All of the organizers of this event and around this State, we owe them a debt of gratitude. We stop today and recognize that we still have so much work to do. We have to redouble our efforts because of the recent spike in intolerance that’s out there in America.”
