Oxnard—Beautiful Native Plants, plenty of food, and lots of information-seekers filled Oxnard Performing Arts Center’s (OPAC) Fourth Annual Native Plant Festival on Saturday, Jan. 25.
THE Oxnard Performing Arts Center was filled with people ready to enjoy a sunny day and head home with some beauty for their front yards.
The OPAC extends far beyond the Oxnard Performing Arts & Convention Center campus and delves deep into the community through its Public Art Initiatives.
Performing Arts Center Director Carolyn Merino said the Native Plant Festival was born during Covid as she really got into plants during the pandemic.
“Folks realized they can brighten up living spaces; they’re healthy and make us happy,” she said. “Native plants are a logical choice for our environment; they’re drought and heat-tolerant and perfect for fire, which we’re enduring now. This is a wonderful way to bring us together.”

Hobson Park East Neighborhood Council Chair Roger Poirier loves California’s native plants.
“I particularly love the flowering type that loves pollinators,” he said. “We need to provide a food source for California natives displaced by cultivated plants and habitat destruction.”
