Oxnard--In his report to the City Council on Tuesday, December 5, City Manager Alex Nguyen discussed Southern California’s food vendor problem.
HE said some statements made are out of date with current reality, and he believes it’s a Statewide problem.
“This is not, as everyone always assumes, not a City of Oxnard-created problem,” he said.
Recently, he said legislators from the Southgate Long Beach area proposed bills in Sacramento to provide more opportunities for street vendors to work.
“The problem we are all confronting now across the State is basically the unintended consequences that were unfortunately not anticipated,” he said. “There are some recent stories with regard to these laws, and only three years ago, we had a lot of people in this Council Chamber upset at the City because we were upholding the permit requirements to sell food on the street. Specifically, the health department’s requirement for food safety.”
He noted that three years ago, residents and vendors advocated not enforcing the County’s health permit requirements for local street vendors.
