Oxnard Celebrates Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Oxnard—During his Tuesday, October 6, City Council meeting, Mayor Luis McArthur called Marianne Parra to the dais, and he issued a proclamation designating October 12, 2026, as Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

MAYOR Pro Tem Gabe Teran read the proclamation and said Indigenous people have lived on the land for thousands of years and values the progress of Indigenous people’s culture.

“Whereas, the City of Oxnard is located on the traditional land of the Chumash people, the Stewards of this land for over 13,000 years, and whereas, the City of Oxnard continues to be the home of Chumash and indigenous migrant communities. We solemnly recognize the brutal impacts and racial injustice to the Indigenous people by colonialism, assimilation, and genocide over the indigenous people over the last 500 years on these lands,” he said. “Whereas, the City of Oxnard recognizes its obligation to uplift and invest in the future of indigenous people, and whereas, the idea of Indigenous Peoples’ Day was first proposed in 1977 by a delegation of native nations to the United Nations during their International Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations in the Americas.”
