Oxnard City Council denounces gun violence

Oxnard-- The City Council, Tuesday, July 19, adopted a resolution denouncing gun violence and supporting gun violence reduction efforts.

The City will forward a copy of the resolution to elected officials in the White House and California Statehouse.

The action encourages State and Federal Representatives to review and adopt reasonable, effective laws addressing possessing, manufacturing, and distributing illegal firearms into the hands of persons prohibited from possessing firearms.

The action allows City, State, and Federal Representatives to continue funding resources to address mental health awareness, fund programs providing assistance to those suffering from a mental health crisis, and better train public safety professionals dealing with people in a mental health crisis.

The resolution supports background checks, “gunfree” zones at schools, and prohibited persons from carrying firearms.

The Oxnard City Council supports “Red Flag” laws allowing family members, police, or certain other officials to seek a court order to temporarily take guns away from someone who may harm themselves or others.

The Council supports the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act providing $750 million in federal funds supporting crisis intervention programs for state courts, including “red-flag” law programs, enhanced background checks for potential gun owners under age 21, and enhanced the federal…
