Oxnard Lawn Bowlers: Dedicated, Passionate

Oxnard—It’s a festive time each Sunday morning, as the Oxnard Lawn Bowling Club at the Wilson Senior Center gets together for a few laughs, and a little friendly trash talk.

COMPETITORS have to bowl with a bias, so it doesn’t roll straight. The object of the game is to get closest to the Jack, a white ball in the center.

Competitors try to knock each other’s bowls away from the Jack, which is where you’ll hear all the friendly trash talk.

Mark Wilson has been pa­rt of the club for seven years.

“I had to give up most of my sports because of my back problems,” he said. “Lawn Bowling is a perfect situation, pretty easy on the body. When I dis­co­ve­red all the nice people he­re, I began to come for the frien­dship.”

His Jack hitting strategy is picking targets on the grass to hit, and he knows how much the bowls curve.

“I accommodate for that and throw it right over that spot and curves right into the Jack,” he said. “The bowls come in different diameters (bias), which determines how much a ball will curve. The bias on my bowls is right down the middle.”
