Oxnard-- The City Council, Tuesday, July 5, approved a resolution supporting reproductive rights in the City of Oxnard.
The issue drew a large number of passionate community members that became unruly at times.
The resolution commits to Women’s rights and reproductive freedom, declares Oxnard a sanctuary city, and supports the codification of the right to abortion into the Federal and California Abortional Law.
The Council voted 4-2 to vote on each portion of the resolution individually.
The Council voted to approve the part of the resolution that protects reproductive freedom and women’s rights. The Council also approved declaring to choose that Oxnard is a sanctuary city, with no funding associated with the resolution. The Council also affirmed and supported proposed legislation that makes access to a safe abortion a Federal, State, and Constitutional Right and urges the Federal and State governments to take immediate action.
City Attorney Stephen Fischer said the California Legislature placed the item on the ballot after the Supreme Court made its decision. He made revisions to the resolution and noted changes in the staff report subsequent to the item being prepared for the agenda.
