Port Hueneme City Council ok’s Landscape Replacement Project

Port Hueneme-- The City Council approved Landscape Replacement Project PHPD-902 Monday, October 3, which will benefit the landscaping at the Port of Hueneme Offices.

The action allows the City to replace the landscape around the Oxnard Harbor District boundary for security reasons, per Coast Guard regulations.

Community Development Director and Planner Tony Stewart presented the item to the council and said the City will use drought-tolerant plants and replace dead or unhealthy plants, and reduce plant litter falling into the Port’s storage units.

“The new landscaping is going to be substantially different from what was previously approved out there,” he said.

In 1989, the council approved Planned Development Permit 670, resulting in the gate design into the main Port Gateway, along with a cohesive landscaping and screen wall design around the Port property, improving the exterior aesthetics while visually screening its operations.

“The landscaping at the time was a variety of tree species, primarily eucalyptus, as well as Fan Palms along Market Street and Coral and Bottle Brush Trees around the Port’s Offices,” he said. “There are low hedges and vine covers along the wall.”
