South Oxnard remains a small town within a city

Oxnard-- The story about College Park champions Larry and Shirley Godwin continues with the Saviers Road Design team, which they did not start, but was formed by Neighborhood Council Chairs in South Oxnard.

Godwin, along with a large group of people advocating for College Park, waged a 50-year crusade to develop the venue, including the recently announced Oxnard Aquatic Center.

Shirley said they felt that South Oxnard was being ignored in the ‘90s.

“Early on (in the ‘90s), we started to notice that South Oxnard streets were not being paved, parks were not being maintained, and when people called for services, they didn’t get them,” she said. “The Neighborhood Council Chairs from South Oxnard, quite a few of them, came together to advocate for South Oxnard. This led to the Saviers Road Design Team, which brought together the Neighborhood Councils and a much wider group. Our group met for 21 years, and as many as 40-50 people squeezed into a meeting, usually at a restaurant.”

She said that Larry took over the email distribution, and Shirley chaired the meetings over the years.
