STREETS OF VINTAGE

BRINGS FOOT TRAFFIC TO FISHERMAN’S WHARF

Channel Islands– The Streets of Vintage Flea Market had a nice sized crowd at Fisherman’s Wharf Saturday, February 12, as shoppers enjoyed lots of unique prizes to take home and enjoy.

STREETS of Vintage Flea Market Founder Jose Celedon said he’s happy to be at Fisherman’s Wharf.

“We are expanding our market and growing rapidly and looking for new locations predominantly that have no foot traffic,” he said. “We were in the downtown area and Heritage Square, and we found this location at the beginning of 2022. I actually came to eat some fish here, and I walked around the area and have been to the art studio here. I got a little depressed because of the low foot traffic.”

He envisioned a flea market, along with an arts and crafts walk at Fisherman’s Wharf, and he made it happen.

“We are now here every second Saturday of the month,” he said. “We’re bringing out the Vintage and arts and crafts, but mainly, we’re focusing on Channel Islands Harbor area and local artists that are from Channel Islands all the way to the Silver Strand area. We’re open to all the artists in Ventura County, but mainly we’re focusing on the arts, beach vibes, and the Vintage that we bring.”

Jose said Fisherman’s Wharf has plenty of potential.

“The goal here is to bring more foot traffic, and we’re doing a good job,” he said. “We’re trying to revitalize this area, and hopefully, our city council and county will do something about the low foot traffic here. If it’s not them, then it’s us by bringing the market here and being allowed on the property and being approved by the Harbor Director.”

He said the Harbor Director submitted Celedon’s permits directly to the county.

“I am so thankful and pleased,” he said about getting permitted to operate at Fisherman’s Wharf. “It’s exciting that the county is so much quicker than the city officials that take so long to approve an event like this. Within 72 hours, I was approved for an Arts and Crafts Market. In over six months in the City of Oxnard, I have not been approved for a market.”

He said the Drag Queens do not perform at Fisherman’s Wharf.

“The Drag Queens are every first Saturday of the month at Heritage Square,” he said. “In the Channel Islands area, there are a lot of artists and paintings, and that is what we’re thankful for, making a beautiful picture out of your own life.”

He said all the local exposure is helping his retail location.

“It’s not as much as we were hoping; we wished we could have kept our market by the store,” he said. “Unfortunately, working with the City of Oxnard and their permit issues is very, very stressful.”

He loves the breeze at Channel Islands Harbor.

“It’s friendly,” he said.

Cindy Suarez operates Moonchildbrand, and she said all of her designs are original.

“My husband designs my line, and I have a little bit of healing crystals, natural gemstones, and jewelry,” she said. I use natural crystals and gemstones because I use them as natural medicine. Now that people are being more open-minded about them and reading about them.”

She said her Crystals are another natural way to deal with medical concerns instead of using pharmaceuticals.

“It’s worked for me, and I hear stories about other people finding the benefits of it,” she said.

Jenna Haendiges from Locally Stranded was selling lots of hats with her Mom and Dad.

“I mostly brought a lot of beach hats and Silver Strand Hats, and I did a little bit of the other communities nearby, like Hollywood Beach, The Shores, and Port Hueneme,” she said. “I’m hoping to get some new customers.”

She said many people place custom orders which is good.

“The funniest one is the “Hide it, Lock it, Keep it from the signs we have at Silver Strand,” she said. “I did a 50 hat order for “More than Conquerors Surf.” They teach foster kids how to surf, and we did about 50 hats for them.”

Jenna said her Dad is in charge of lowering the tents and transporting items, and her Mom is the official spokeswoman.

“I am her biggest cheerleader,” Mom Breena Newbery said. “I am so supportive of Hanna. She has followers, and these people follow her all over. Her product is great, and she is very loyal, consistent, and committed.”

Breena said Jenna comes from a very creative family and her talents come naturally.

“She loves Silver Strand where she lives, and Locally Stranded seems to work really well for her,” Breena said. “I always tell her that I want this or I want that, can I have that, and then we come up with certain ones for me.”

She said custom orders are no problem, and Jenna offers quick delivery.

“It’s really nice to have something unique,” Breena said. “I’m a crafter from way back, so custom orders are imperative for people because it makes it personal. She does custom orders almost immediately. She’s really good at that.”

She loves being part of Locally Stranded.

“It’s so much fun to be a part of an adult child’s life and see them succeed, do something good, and see people love what they do,” she said.

One of the more unique items for sale was a new clothing line called “Big Fat Joint. The clothing comes packed to look like it’s a “Big Fat Joint.”

“My original product is the Bong Caddy, a silicon tray to hold all your needs for sitting and smoking,” Cannipro and Cannipro Clothing Founder Scott Seeler said. “It also protects your glass which is the main reason for making this. Now I’m adding a clothing line with t-shirts, and I have a few more designs coming out in the next couple of days, as well as socks, shorts, hoodies, and hats along with all sorts of these goodies with these logos.”

He also markets a “Bluntalicious” shirt wrapped in brown paper to look like a big fat blunt. “My son has a very expensive glass collection, and I almost broke one of his bongs about four years ago,” he said. “I went online to find a tray to protect it, and I couldn’t find one, so I made one of my own. I’m in 150 smoke shops currently. I slowed down my selling due to Covid-19, but now that we’re picking back up, we’re selling some really cool shirt designs.”
