Teen Center approved in Port Hueneme

Port Hueneme-- The Port Hueneme City Council, Monday, March 7, approved an agreement with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme to establish a Teen Center at the Orvene S Community Center for exclusive use for 10 years.

Community Services & Recreation Programs Manager Anna Hanley said in an effort to serve teenagers in the Port Hueneme Community, a partnership has been proposed to provide a dedicated space. This space will serve for evidence-based approaches to academic support and social and emotional health for Port Hueneme teens and adolescents to recover from the disruptions caused by Covid-19.

“This effort will be targeting the roughly 2,000 youth between the ages of 13 and 20 years of age,” she said. “At present, the Port Hueneme Boys and Girls Clubhouse serves the youth as young as five years old-- making it vital to have a separate and defined area for teens.”

She noted that the agreement allows staff to address issues specific to teens and makes members of all ages feel welcome and at home while at the club. The existing Teen Center is a converted racquetball court, and the teens do not feel comfortable and perceive the…
