Turner inspires Pre-Juneteenth crowd

Oxnard--The Juneteenth Committee of Ventura County's pre-celebration at the Oxnard Public Library Saturday, June 10, continues with Retired Major Gamaliel W. Turner, who told the attendees that he feels the Lord at the celebration.

"Too much has happened this morning," he said. "Brother (David) Lee talked about recognizing where we are, and we talked about what people have done, and we talked about our ancestors, the Lord, and we talked about Moses. We talked about the Israelites; we talked about hope and dreams."

He said Juneteenth is a remarkable and interesting event in Black History, which is an interesting contradiction. 

"We heard about historical events that surround Juneteenth indicating that Texas was the last to announce Juneteenth, the recognition day of the end of slavery," he said. "Here is the problem; this is 2023, and Juneteenth was recognized until last year (2022)."

He said they're on the cuspice of what's going to happen on June 19 as an official Colony. 

"Don't ask what we've been celebrating for 30 years," he said. "Do not be ashamed of the number of people sitting here and the number of people who spoke and have no idea what Juneteenth was. People of Color…
