Ventura Approves SAFER Grant

Ventura — The City Council, during its Tuesday, June 9 meeting, approved its Department of Homeland Security Staffing for adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER), and Kris McDonald, Fire Chief, along with Chief Financial Officer Greg Morley, Assistant Fire Chief Jeremy Henderson, and Business Officer Avery Brunk, said the grant is offered through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

IT was created to increase the number of Front Line Firefighters to comply with Staffing, response, and operational standards by the NFPA, the National Fire Protection Association,” McDonald said.

The City currently has an active SAFER Grant, and Brunk said it was awarded in 2021, and the Council approved the application in January 2022.

“In February 2023, we received the Notification of Award and got the Council's approval to accept that award,” she said. “The period of performance for our initial SAFER Grant began in August of 2023, and during that three-year period of performance, it is set to end in August of 2025. The Staff has requested an extension to extend the period of performance by six months.” 

For the grant we are seeking approval to apply for, the deadline is June 22, 2026, so it's about two weeks away.
