World AIDS Day honors the lost

Ventura—The City Council issued a proclamation honoring December 1, as World AIDS Day.

Deputy Mayor Doug Halter said he’s been observing World AIDS Day for 30 years, with the last five on the Council and now as Deputy Mayor.

“On December 1, we recognize World AIDS Day to honor those who have lost their lives to HIV and AIDS,” he said. “We support those living with the disease and recommit to prevention, education, and compassion.”

Since the beginning of the epidemic, he said, millions of lives have been impacted, and while tremendous medical progress has been made, the work is not finished.

“World Aids Day is a reminder that stigma remains a barrier to care, access to testing, treatment, and education saves lives, and community partnerships are essential to progress, he said. “The City is proud to recognize the Quilt Project Gold Coast, whose work has helped humanize the epidemic by honoring lives lost, and educating future generations.”

The Quilts on display aren’t a memorial, he said, it’s a powerful reminder of love, loss, advocacy, and resilience.
