Filipino Festival Fills College Park

Oxnard—It was a sunny and hot day on Sunday, October 4, but it was a great day for Fiestas Filipinas at College Park.

THE tremendous crowd enjoyed music, lots of great barbecue, and plenty of dancing as Filipinos took the day to celebrate their heritage.

Filipino American Council of Ventura County Executive Director Charleen Morla-Garcia said it’s her second time as the Executive Director.

“This is our first year back,” she said. “We have had the Fiestas Filipinas since its inception in 1987, but we would have it every other year. We would alternate having a Fiesta one year, then the Council would have a recognition night the following year.”

During COVID, she said they stopped.

“After COVID, we were looking at other organizations and gave them the opportunity to host, and it didn’t really happen in Oxnard, but we had an organization in Ventura pull off a successful one last year.”

Mayor Luis McArthur approached Morla-Garcia and said he wanted the Fiesta back in Oxnard.

“We’re back and happy to be here today,” she said. “When you walk through the door, we have 40 vendors in our Fiesta Marketplace, and we have a kids’ corner. They are a…
