Funding youth programs featured during forum

Oxnard-- The Ventura County League of. Women Voters District One Candidate Forum continues with Moderator David Maron asking the candidates how they’ll advocate for Oxnard’s youth.

Christopher Arevalo said he’ll advocate a youth budget that can expand youth programs.

“For children, the Elementary School District has after-school programs,” he said. “My daughter, who is 30, participated in the youth Basketball Programs that were held at the city gym. I know we have an art program that needs to get funded, but I think the whole issue of services to children relies on funding.”

Doug Partello said the City can do more cost-effective programs and bring in partnerships with the private sector, with non-profits and local government working together.

“We need more cost sharing because there are benefits for all,” he said. “We all benefit from this investment. We just had a 14-year-old boy who was gunned down at a bus stop by a 15-year-old boy with gang violence. We need to give our youth options where they can get into some positive activities; taekwondo, martial arts, basketball; other programs. Parks and Recreation can expand their programs more cost effectively.”
